Episode 124: Ask a Coach- 360 Feedback and When Life Interferes with Work

After a brief foray into the local weather and why New Jersey is far more than what you might see on The Jersey Shore, we dive into listener and client questions.

Our first question this week comes from a listener who asked what she can do if her organization doesn't offer 360 Degree Feedback, a way to gather feedback from managers and coworkers so that you get insight on how you show up and impact those you work with. (And contrary to Eric’s not-so-serious description, it doesn't involve spinning in a circle in front of your peers.)

We explore the benefits and potential drawbacks of 360 and why it’s not the only way to get feedback or build an action plan. In fact, if your workplace already fosters a culture that encourages consistent, courageous conversations, you may already be in good shape. And if not, we offer a set of questions to ask and steps to take so you get feedback and create your own action plan.

Our second question focuses on what to do when we find our life is interfering with our work. One key thing to notice here is whether we're telling ourselves stories about how we “must continue as if nothing is taking place”. If that’s the case, it’s an opportunity to do the inside job to really clarify what our expectations are and where the pressure we feel is truly coming from.

And whether we just need a slower pace or find we can’t make that next business trip due to our circumstances, we may find ourselves wrestling with when or how much to disclose about what’s going on at home. So, today we’re sharing a set of reflection questions to help you make those decisions as well.

The result is a better understanding of the difference between the pressure you’re putting on yourself and the real requests you may need to make of others as you tend to something urgent in your life.

If you’d like to continue this work we invite you to learn more about our Fall group coaching opportunities here.

In Our Conversation Today, We’re Exploring:

  • Why the 360 Degree Feedback Process is not the only way to get feedback and

  • Why a post-feedback gameplan is a necessary part of the feedback process

  • How you can still benefit from feedback even if you don’t have access to a 360 process

  • What to do if you’re feeling like your personal life is or will soon impact your ability to perform at work

  • Why it’s helpful to determine where the stress, pressure, or expectations we’re feeling are truly coming from
