Episode 119: What Do We Owe Each Other (Inspired By The Good Place)

For four seasons, week by week, Ted Danson, Kristin Bell, and the rest of the amazing cast of The Good Place explored the question, “What do we owe each other in families, relationships, and communities?”

This week, Nayla and Eric unpack the question: what do we owe each other at work?

What do we really owe our employers? And what do they really owe us?

We use a scene from The Good Place as an example of the differences between our explicit contracts with work, our implied and self-imposed contracts, and the feelings or beliefs that may come up when those things are in conflict.

  • Must we stay at a job because they supported us during personal troubles?

  • Does my organization owe me a promotion because my peer got one?

  • Do we have deals with our organizations, or do we have expectations?

We talk through questions we can ask ourselves to sift through who said what, what the relationship between us and our place of work really is about, and what we DO in fact owe each other.

Listen here or on your favorite podcast network to learn what we really owe our organizations and the benefit of doing our own inside work.

Do you have self-imposed contracts? We’d love to hear about them at info@insidejobthepodcast.com
