In Our Conversation Today, We’re Exploring:

  • The importance of our identity when it comes to making changes

  • How to practice self-regard and compassion when dealing with habits we want to change

  • The inside work we can do to shift out of procrastination

  • The surprising type of coaching that can have a remarkable impact on how we show up and shift our procrastination habits

Today we welcome Dr. Christine Li, a trained psychologist and psychotherapist, who you may know as the Procrastination Coach.

She has been exploring procrastination for over ten years, through graduate school, work and motherhood, to heal the chaos and clutter in her own life and teach others the same. Her work has shown Dr. Li that procrastination is not about the work itself, not about timers or calendars, or productivity tools,  it’s about the inside job.

Procrastination is not who we are, and it's not hard-wired.

Working through procrastination doesn't mean kicking our own ass. Instead, it requires us to observe ourselves, show ourselves regard, and practice acceptance even when we recognize habits we’d like to shift.

We can begin to pivot by committing to something without insisting on completion and taking care of ourselves as we move forward. The goal is not perfection but simply an improvement in the quality of our work process.

One way to get to the bottom of our procrastination is to know ourselves and recognize when we’re triggered to procrastinate. **When it comes to habits and practical tools, some work is undoubtedly an inside job, but we may also need another person to help us along the way. We will also start to see that some of our old habits may not be flexible enough to cover us for this phase of our lives.

We’ll want to carefully craft a bridge to the new habit where change is visible and our identity also evolves in the process.

Today’s conversation is full of Dr. Li’s rich insights including how we remove judgment from our work equation, where our habits and identity are tied together (as in James Clear’s work), and the importance of confidence, voice, and experimentation.

Dr. Christine Li is a New York-based clinical psychologist, known as the "Procrastination Coach," who specializes in helping her clients identify and understand the stories behind their procrastination so that they can reconnect with their natural motivation, talent, and productivity. She uses a unique coaching process that is a blend of mindset strategy, time and emotion management tips, and a deep belief in the power we each have. Dr. Li is the host of the podcast Make Time for Success, which features relatable stories of people who have overcome self-doubt and resistance to find personal and professional success.
