In Our Conversation Today, We’re Exploring:

  • How we can build our inner confidence and help others do the same

  • Whether authority comes before or after the big promotion, the book deal or the other visibility-creating event in your career.

  • How to assess your own attachment style (and why quizzes won’t cut it)

  • How Bethany embraces her own varied background to build work she’s delighted by

Today we welcome best-selling book coach Bethany Saltman to the podcast to explore what the science of attachment theory might teach us about claiming authority and confidence in our own careers.

Bethany shares how she used her own varied background (one that includes consulting, teaching, zen, and writing) to dive into the understanding attachment theory, by investigating and writing the book Strange Situation, named for the observational instrument scientists use to understand how children attach to their caregivers.

While most of us think of attachment as a way of understanding our relationships with other people, Bethany connects the dots for us about what attachment can mean about our belief in ourselves, especially as it pertains to our ownership of our careers.

Bethany gives us a primer on attachment theory, and helps us see how understanding it helps us in life and in work. In the language of attachment, a ‘secure-base’ in our work is essential to be able to present ourselves professionally in a way that serves us.

And if you’ve ever struggled with confidence at work, or trembled regarding your authority on a topic, you intuitively know that a secure-base is not just nice to have. It’s essential!

We talk throughs how authority (or confidence) is developed and what we can do build and reinforce it. Whether we’re securely attached or not - confident about our authority or not - we offer some of the tools available to all of us to deepen our security in our relationships and in ourselves.

And of course we share the inside job it takes to apply all that we learn from Bethany to our work and personal lives.
