How do we think about situations where trust has been broken?

Are there times when trust can be rebuilt?

Ever asked yourself: After dishonesty or a broken promise, how am I supposed to trust this (person/supervisor/team/organization) again?

Whether it’s someone who says one thing but changes the story, makes a commitment they don’t uphold, or does something in violation of an existing agreement we had, it can be challenging to know what to do when someone violates our trust.

We can lose trust in people, for sure, and we can also lose trust in the system, processes, or organization that surrounds a painful experience.

It can also be a long and messy process to rebuild, and even healing can leave us with some residual pain, or what Nayla calls “professional scar tissue”. And while it may feel like the offending party should initiate a healing process, it often falls to us to get things started. And stepping up in this way can be its own challenge.

In the end, though, understanding what we are feeling and what we’re willing to do or not do to rebuild trust are core parts of the inside job.

Plus: We explore our Team Thor, Team Captain America loyalties, and the process of creating peaceful office spaces that reflect who we are.

In Our Conversation Today, We’re Exploring:

  • What trust really implies and the value of clearly defining it for ourselves and our organizations

  • What it means to navigate experiences where our trust is violated

  • The importance of pinpointing the specific people, systems, or processes we’ve lost trust in

  • What it may look like to come back from a violation of trust and why it’s not the same for everyone.
