What does it really look like to align your values with your career?

This week we’re sharing the first of a two-episode conversation with our friend Amy Giddon, the founder of the app Daily Haloha. In this portion of the conversation, Amy shares how she made a series of thoughtful, value-driven career leaps from corporate life, to academia, to the founder of a tech start-up that aligns with her beliefs that everyone matters and everyone belongs.

Her journey included moments of experimenting and times when she found her values didn’t align with where she was. Curiosity and confidence that (to quote Marie Forleo) everything is “figuroutable” can help us to navigate this kind of misalignment.

One of the best things Amy offers us is the powerful question: “What is bigger than my fear?” Often, we’ll find that the answer is tied to our values. As Amy shares this alignment coupled with curiosity and desire allowed her to take chances in her career.

What values have you aligned your career with? And where might you need to do some realignment?

Naming our desires and values creates a north star that helps us stay inspired and on track. For Amy, this inspiration came from Subway Therapy and led her to find her own mix of digital media, participatory art, and elements of empathy. It also gave her permission to skip the playbook of how things are typically done, letting go of the venture-backed-start-up myths of extreme hustle culture, overnight success, and total self-sacrifice as a requirement for success.

When the way it’s done is not right for us, Amy’s insight suggests returning to our values, deciding to do it in a way that is aligned with a north star, and having patience with ourselves as we pave our own way.
